anyway... i had mentioned previously i was going to try and set up a server for all of us to play cstrike on. i would still like to, but i'm not sure if 144kbps will be fast enough. does anyone know what kind of bandwidth running a server takes? i want to be sure i have enough left over before i do anything too rash. thanks... Not sure though.. it could be Z||000002||MarginWalker||02-21-2001||11:42 AM||derek3@home.com||On 144k line, you gonna be able to do 2, maybe 3-4 people max....figure on 56k per person in the server MINIMUM if you want good gameplay. Figure it this way: 56k modem is barely acceptible as a client connection, and the server has to handle each client simultaneously. Oh yeah, I assume you are using dedicated server on separate linux box. Additionally, you usually got issues cause low-bandwidth lines aint gonna be hooked directly to the fattest pipe on the ISP's backbone, it will go through several combiners and routers first.
Sometimes i run a linux HLDS server on cable modem (1m Down/128k up) or 384K SDSL, with 6-8 people, mostly for clan practices where we are mainly talking and moving but not fighting...people bitch about the lag once in a while, but its ok. Not good, but ok.
Given enough notice, I probably could get a server locked down with password for a few hours (in East/Central U.S.) so we could all play. Probably see some BAD (as in "not good") playing, cause i get the feeling a lot of people who come here spend more time playing with linux than playing HL/CS.
