when i tried to get from the menu to the console as normal user (better: running wine hl as superuser) the screen got alway freezed (endless "loading"). then i tried to run the xserver as root, and it worked. (wine-20010112, xfree86-4.0.2, nvidia-0.96).

ps: i know crazney that you are not going to like this post very much, but anyway, i think it makes life easier; try the ehl-script and change some settings, and you will be amazed...

what arnt i going to like?

anyway, running xserver as root _doesnt_ change anything - EXCEPT you are using DIFFERENT wine configs, different permisoins on the CS dirs etc.

make sure that you (user) have the same configs as the super use, make sure that ur /usr/local/wine/ (wherever ur C drive is) is OWNED by ur user. etc..

ehl is a shell, doesnt set it up, im happy it works for you, but not for many others.

Root may also be the only one to have permissions to the DRI device if you haven't configured:

Section "DRI"
mode 0666
EndSection

in your XF86Config
