A||||6||SewerOpiate||16 bit color? Z||000000||SewerOpiate||12-18-2000||07:35 PM||pages@camtech.net.au||Hi there
i have a windows installation of half life, and this still occurs if'n i install it straight to a linux partition, so i dont think its that. the problem is that when i start up half life with wine (newish cvs), and after a while, a half life screen comes up, which says "Half-Life requires 16 bit color. Please change your desktop settings to HiColor. Sometimes this is called ..... etc". i have tried changing to 16 bit color for XFree, but that didnt seem to help it any
so what can i try from here? it looks like it would work, as that screen seems smooth enough to work!
not on this topic, but, what exactly are some of the valve people doing to help us with our problems? like porting some parts of it, or making work arounds or something?
Thanks!

wine --winver win98 hl.exe -- hl.exe --console
It worked for me...
had the same problem.

pico /etc/X11/XF86Config
Now look for the area where it says
Section "Screens"
a little bit down is DefaultColorDepth
change it to 16, now hit Ctrl+O and then enter to save and to quit Ctrl+X Now if you had X open while doing this his Ctrl+Backspace to close it and then type startx to open it again, now half-life should get past that warning (hehe if it will work totaly, probably not, it's very unstable in linux)

depending on your distro you may need to edit XF86Config-4
