Updated Finnish Translation- 12/02/2003- may1937

Mikko Ikola was kind enough to provide an updated Finnish translation of the HOWTO. Look at it here

New version of LHL Howto- 23/09/2002- may1937

Hey look exactly two months since the last update! Not as bad as last time, at least =]

I just mainly went through to correct errors and out of date material. If you find any mistakes, please let me know. Here is a direct link to the howto.

New Translation: Finnish. Cheat Protection.- 23/07/2002- crazney

Mikko Ikola has sent on his Finnish translation of the howto (version 0.4.1). The link is on the HOWTO page. For all you guys wondering about cheat protection, TransGaming Technologies provides binary versions of WineX that normally support the latest cheat protection (though they need to be updated every time valve changes the cheat protection). The binaries do have a small charge with them.

TransGaming Technologies website. LHL Updates- 23/10/2001- crazney

Hi everyone. The long awaited TransGaming Website was finally launched today. It allows users to subscribe (which involves paying, well worth while). Once you have subscribed you get a certain ammount of input into what gets worked on next. For example you could vote to improve the menu's in Half-Life etc.
With this note, I am also informating everyone that because of TransGaming there will be very few updates here. If you need commercial support for Half-Life or other windows games under linux be sure to subscribe to TransGaming!
The forums here will still exist, but if you want better, more promptly answer forums - be sure to use the TransGaming ones!

HOWTO Danish Translation- 23/7/2001- crazney

Thanks to Mikkel Mastrup a Danish version of the LHL howto is now available on the HOWTO page. Cheers Mate! Also for all those thousands of people that have asked me for an SGML version of the HOWTO, its also available there.

Lastly, im working on something pretty big, cant tell you what yet but its something related to lhl - but alot bigger, as a result I havent had time to do the much needed rewrite etc. BTW, my email address that was on this page died ages ago, my new one is crazney@crazney.net.

Valve announce Linux port of Half-Life- 1/4/2001- crazney

Yes ladies and gentlemen, its true..

In a press release on the morning of Sunday, 1st of April, 2001 Valve CEO Gabe Newell announced that they had secretly been working on a Linux port of the most popular game, Half-Life.
"We have taken alot of offensive email recently, asking for a port, all the while we have been secretly porting the game, it has been alot of fun."
Valve's marketing department speculate that Half-Life will be a top seller for the Linux platform, despite the fact its getting relitvly old, and that it seems to work flawlessly under WINE.
"We think that most of the Linux Half-Life players will purchase the game, in order to get native support, better performance and ofcourse to support the Linux gaming industry. Sales of Half-Life will determain if we port Teams Fortress 2 to linux".

So there you go people.. 1st of April 2001 will go down in the linux history books :-)

New HOWTO, Radio Sounds in CS work and another thing...- 15/1/2001- crazney

Hi, I've put a new HOWTO up (should be accessable on the HOWTO page - which contains the remidy to the radio sound problem in CS thats been bugging us! YAY. So go read that "radio sounds dont work" thingo.

On another note, I'm going back to my last year of secondary school in a few weeks, need to do alot of work on that - so I'm looking around for anyone that thinks they can maintain the HOWTO and the website for a year - with regular updates and stuff - contact me for more info.

French translation update- 2/1/2001- crazney

Clément "Nodens" Hermann has translated the version 0.1 of the HOWTO to french, and its now up on the HOWTO page for all to view.

New HOWTO and DirectX WINE project.- 1/1/2001- crazney

Ok people, I've finished v0.1 of the HOWTO, its now available on the howto link on the left. German version has not been updated, and the french version should be done some time soon :-). Not much changed this versoin, just some notes about x4.0.2 and a few more troubleshooting topics.. Oh, and it looks different casue when I changed over to debian the sgmltools seems to use a different html template.

On another note, there is a great team working on implementing a full DirectX API for WINE - this will mean the ability to use Direct3D, better DirectDraw stuff (menu's) and better DirectSound stuff (sound). Its an opensource project with a twist, they do want people to "subscribe", which means pay money, $5 a month.. They havent started taking money yet, but when they do, I urge all of you to subscribe, I know I will be! (aslong as I dont loose my job :-)). Anyway, there website is here

Response from Valve and new HOWTO (testing it out)- 7/12/2000- crazney
Hey guys, after a few emails to Valve Software enquiring about some of the problems some of us are having with LHL, they got back to me. Nothing resolved yet, but this cool dude from Valve Software, Doug Lombardi, has told me that they are looking into the issues immediatly. So hopefully I they will get back to me soon (maybe even on weather there will be a TF2 client port.. but lets take one thing at a time ;-p).
In other news, I have converted my HOWTO to SGML, and added some info for 3DFX / G400 users.. I havent uploaded it yet because its still test conditions (waiting replies from the 3DFX and G400 contacts) - anyway, you can locate it here This should now be used instead of the old one, especially for DRI / 3DFX users - feedback appreciated.
Message Board- 4/12/2000- crazney
Thanks to this cool host, we now have a message board. It is available for your viewing at the link on the left. Enjoy.
Site hosting!- 2/12/2000- crazney
Everything seems to always happen at once :-).. Anyhow, I have moved the site over to linuxgames, generously hosted by linuxgames and telefragged (link on the right hand side!). Thats why youll notice some add bannars floating around, but atleast the site will be better/faster and wont lag me out playing CS when people are accessing my gateway ;-p. Thanx linuxgames/telefragged!
I will also be doing some re-writing of the HOWTO, putting in more DRI info, changing it to SGML and fixing some other stuff.. Along with this will go some HTML-revamp. This will all happen in the next week or so, so check back soon!
Various updates- 2/12/2000- crazney
Well, its been a while since I've updated.. I have been bogged down with exams recenently, only one more to go then I will start doing some more work on LHL. Anyhow, a 3DFX user seems to be having some luck getting LHL working with the TDFX wine patch, I will post the full story soon.
DRI people seem to be having some difficulty (g400, 3dfx, ati etc).. but we are getting there. Ill post more info on this later aswell.
And lastely a German reader Bernd Ritter has translated the HOWTO into German, check it out HERE.
possible DRI (3dfx, matrox, ati) issue- 15/11/2000- crazney
Recently I have had three emails from 3dfx users saying they cant get DGA working (as described in my howto). I only have a NVidia GeForce 2, and it works fine in that. So whilst we are stil resolving this, if you are a DRI user having problems with DGA (in LHL :-)), then try setting 'useDGA=no' in the wine.conf and adding '-windowed' to the command line of hl.exe (after -console).
Also, if you are a DRI user using DGA properly (as described in my howto), please contact me.
HOWTO and website update- 14/11/2000- crazney
I have updated the HOWTO with a few new things, its now v0.02 :-).
The website has also been updated, with the "About" and "Working" pages now online, check them out if you want. I am also about to upload some new screenies, and delete the out of date ones.
More stuff- 14/11/2000- crazney
Hey again people. Just a few small updates. Firstly the screen shots hree are a few days out of date (I have fixed some major bugs since). Secondly we and a mate are working hard to try and fix the Counter-Strike radio-sound problem, it should be done in a few days.
On another note, I spelt 'David McBride's' name wrong on a few occasions (he wrote the original howto) - thats fixed now.
Also, I'm still looking for a mirror.. doesnt have to be anything fancy, but I'd like it to have PHP.. let me know.
Update...- 12/11/2000- crazney
Well, im currently writing my HOWTO, it should be up in a few days (beta of it). Im also pleased to report that the problem with overlapping fonts (see the screenshots) I have fixed, it was a simple problem of Half-Life detecting the wrong res.
I'm also looking for some help with this page, preferably in hosting and writing it, cause im to busy atm to sit down and write a backend and do all the pages..
interested? email me..
cheers, craz
Update: My howto is now up, click the HOWTO link on the left!
Linux Half-Life Re-Open- 8/11/2000- crazney
Hey again people. I have decided to ReOpen Linux Half-Life. It got taken down a while ago because my server that i was hosting it on (co-hosted machine at Labyrinth connections) was pulled away from me :(.

Anyway, this time around i'm focussing less on a pettion as i had last time (yes there prolly will be one eventually), but more on getting new linux users running HL under linux (through the help of WINE).

So enjoy people...
